Our Story, Centers for Family Development, Inc. (CFDI) is a private, non-profit comprehensive family counseling agency whose aim is “to improve lives through comprehensive children & family services” at all our distinctive locations.

OUR HISTORY
Centers For Family Development, Inc. (CFDI) is a private, non-profit comprehensive family counseling agency that was originally established in 1978 as Black Family Development, Inc. (BFDI) by the Detroit Chapter of the National Association of Black Social Workers (DNABSW). By establishing BFDI as a family counseling agency, the DABSW sought to promote and provide quality community-aligned social work services in Detroit. Since that time, BFDI has grown to accommodate the in­creasing demand for a variety of specialized, family-focused counseling and services in the community.

In 2023, BFDI was one of three organizations to be granted designation as a Certified Community Behavioral Health Clinic (CCBHC). This milestone marked a significant expansion of the agency’s scope, including the integration of physical healthcare services and enhanced counseling support.

In 2025 BFDI’s Board and Executive leadership reflected upon BFDI’s growth and transformation. To better represent its broadened vision and holistic approach to care, the name Centers For Family Development, Inc. (CFDI) was adopted; while maintaining Black Family Development, Inc. as the organization's assumed name.

CFDI’s mission is to strengthen and enhance the lives of children, youth, and families through partnerships that support safe, nurturing, vibrant homes, schools and communities.


VISION

CFDI’s vision is “To be the self-sufficient premier provider of comprehensive family counseling services to children, youth, and families - the pacesetter for quality, innovative services and training with national recognition.”


PURPOSE

CFDI’s purpose is to provide culturally sensitive quality services to families, individuals, community groups, and organizations residing and/or operating in the Detroit/ Wayne County and Oakland communities.
